I never signed up to teach for the thank you. Not just from students, but admins as well. This is a not a job where people can thrive on thank you. The look on a student's face when they finally understand something is worth more than any thank you they could offer.
They thank yous I have received over the years are beautiful and are something I hold dear. I think we could all thank people more than we do for the nice things that happen every day. Maybe it's sad that I do not expect thanks for what I do every day for students. I just never got into teaching for the thanks. I got into teaching to maker a difference. I can do that without the thanks, but when I do get them, they are stored in a special place so I can revisit them when times are tough.
Take a moment and thank someone who is awesome. It will make their day.
Reminds me of a file I have...Keepers. Little notes, letters of appreciation, funny post it notes or emails, even clippings from the school newspaper all make this my go-to file. (A really rotten day/year? Read the Keeper file!) I will take this moment to thank you. This post says exactly what I think. We aren't here for the thanks, but it sure is lovely when we hear it!

ReplyDeleteI like how you said that you didn't get into teaching for the thanks but instead to make a difference! I couldn't agree more! I'm not a teacher yet but I plan on teaching Secondary English. I have two years left and I couldn't be more excited! And after reading your blog, I got even more antsy!
ReplyDeleteI was very poor in writing English essays. So, comparatively I had been scoring less grades in that subject and hence used cheap online services. But, the newly arrived English teacher changed whole my concept about English language learning and make me to love English. Now, English is my favorite subject!
